A contingent of 15 travelled to Bujumbura, Burundi to compete in the ITF/CAT Eastern African Junior Individual and Teams’ Championships in January 2024. These included 12 players, 2 coaches and a chaperone. The tournament compromised of 9 countries namely; Uganda, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Comoros, Seychelles, Djibouti and Ethiopia.
The tournament started with four days of individual performances. Okello Samuel was the first runners up losing to Dan of Burundi in U-14 boys’ category finals. Hider Afoyorwoth lost to the Kenyan in the semi-finals of the U-16 girls’ category. Latif Sendyowa lost to a Burundian in the semi-finals U-16 boys’ category.
Olivia Natukunda lost to Kenya in the quarter finals U-16 girls’ category. Claire Nalubula lost to Kenya in the quarter finals of the U-14 girls’ category. The second week involved team events which were played in a round robin tournament format. Sebbi Muzamilu and Okello Samuel represented Uganda in the U-14 boys’ category were champions beating Ethiopia. The U-14 girls finished 4th, U-16 boys finished 3rd, U-16 girls finished 3rd.
Uganda was placed 3rd in the overall team placements at the end of the Championship. The tournament was graced with UTA ex-com members Mr. Matthias Nalyanya and Mr. Alvin Bagaya who are the President and General Secretary respectively.
